Marie Curie led scientific research in many fields. She was influenced by Henri Becquerel’s discovery of radioactivity in 1896. Her husband Pierre then joined her on research into the radiation of radioactive bodies. This led them to discover radium and polonium.

After the death of her husband, she became the first woman professor of physics to the Faculty of Science. But she became ill due to repeated exposure to radiation from radium during her research, and this finally caused her death.

Her dedication and self sacrifice led to important medical and scientific progress for mankind.
