All cats belong to a family called the felids.
Cats are graceful animals that have a rounded face. They have a sand-papery tongue and needle-like teeth.
They live between 9 and 15 years, though they can sometimes live for over 20 years.

There are over 30 different breeds of tame cats, with different body shapes and sizes, colouring, fur length, eye colour, tail length, voice, and temperament.

Cats will kill and eat small mammals, birds, fish, mice, rats. Cats use their acute sight and hearing to catch prey.
But they also eat the food that you can buy or make for them.

Cats are very affectionate, they like to play with you or with a small toy. They're very quiet and they like to sleep.

Cats are primarily nocturnal (most active at night). They have very good night vision.
A cat sees about 6 times better than a human at night, and needs 1/6 the amount of of light that a human does - it has a layer of extra reflecting cells which absorb light.

At birth, a kitten will weigh about 3 ounces. The typical male housecat will weigh between 7 and 9 pounds, slightly less for female housecats.

* A domestic cat can sprint at about 19 kilometers per hour.
* Cats were domesticated over 7,000 years ago.
* A cat has more bones than we do. Humans have 206 but cats have 230!
* We believe cats do see in colour, although not exactly the way we do.
