He
was looking at a creature with antlers
tall as trees.
He scratched his head, he racked his
brains, but it was as if his mind had
seized.
He cried: `Oh dear!' And the creature
did a dance.
A DEER it was – it never knew
its name was just by chance.
And still Adam's problem hadn't gone
away.
There was an animal standing waiting
and he'd no name to say.
The creature before him was very very
big.
`Ummmm ... would you like to be a crocofly?'
he asked it. `Or a mousekey? Or a butterpig?'
The creature looked disgusted. It shook
its floppy ears.
Oh help! thought Adam. This name could
take me years.
And then he heard a soft voice speaking
in his head:
`Adam!' whispered God. `Try elephant
instead.'
`ELEPHANT!' cried Adam. And off the
creature went.
This was just the name it wanted. It
was happy and content.
Adam grinned and looked up. `Thank you,
God,' he cried.
`I know I’ll get the job done
with you here at my side.'
And so he carried on with joy –
the names came thick and fast:
Squirrel, dog, gorilla – the whole
parade went past.
`Well, that's that,' said Adam. `Tea-time
at last.'
