I don’t know anyone who doesn’t like pancakes and doesn’t look forward to Pancake Day!

Did you know that another name for Pancake Day is Shrove Tuesday? But what is Shrove Tuesday? Come to think of it, what is a shrove? And why is it on a Tuesday?!

We have all heard of Lent but what is it all about?

Fact 1: Shrove Tuesday always comes before Ash Wednesday. Ash Wednesday is the first day of Lent.

Fact 2: Lent is said to last for 40 days but actually lasts 46! Sundays don't count!

Fact 3: 40 days is a Biblical amount of time. How long did it rain in Noah and his Ark? 40 days. How long did Jonah give Ninevah to repent? 40 days. How long did Moses and Elijah spend in the Wilderness? 40 days. How long did Jesus go into the desert for? You guessed it! 40 DAYS!

Fact 4: Lent ends at Easter. We use Lent to remember that Jesus died on the cross so we could be forgiven of our sins and go to Heaven.

Fact 5: The word Shrove comes from the word Shrive. Shrive was when you went to a priest to confess what you had done wrong and ask forgiveness.

Traditionally people fasted for the whole forty days. Fasting just means not doing something. People always used to fast from food and festivities.

Today, some people just give up something they enjoy, such as chocolate and often give their time or chocolate money to a charity instead.
